Confessions Reading Group led by Jim Pierce. Starting Monday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. we will be meeting for the Confessions Reading Group. Do you know what it means to "confess" the faith? Did you know that Lutherans have a formal written confession? Are you interested in reading the Lutheran Confessions? Join us as we read through, and discuss our Lutheran confession. For a great time of fellowship, please see the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board for more details and to sign-up.
For the month of August, we will be collecting shaving cream, razors and after shave for both Immanuel Community Services and Compass Cascade Women's Shelter.
Today’s Sunday School lesson is about Jacob and his family from Genesis 29:1-30:24. The children will learn that through Jacob’s family, God brought forth the Savior, Jesus Christ, who endured lies, deception, and the schemes of sinful humankind to work our salvation on the cross. Families can discuss how we sin when we lie or deceive others and how such actions show that we don’t trust God to provide and care for us. Ask your children if they have ever suffered because of someone’s lies. Talk about how Jesus suffered and died for us on the cross. Talk about the first commandment and how it relates to this Bible story.
We will be collecting school supplies for Lutheran World Relief through September 25. Please pick up a shopping list on the table in the Narthex.
Do you enjoy music? Would you like to ring handbells? Maybe a family member or friend would like to learn with you. The bell choir practices weekly and plays in both services once a month. If you’d like to learn to play bells, please contact Dorothy, and we will arrange training.
Budget requests for the 2012 Spending Guide need to be in by Sunday, October 9. You can put them in Harry Edmon’s choir room box or email to the treasurer@messiahseattle.org.
This fall, consider signing up for electronic giving. Messiah Lutheran Church offers an easy way to give on a recurring basis. To give electronically, visit www.messiahseattle.org and locate the link to the electronic giving page. If you have any questions, please contact Kathee in the church office.
Many people are inquiring about wedding gifts for Pastor Mankin & Lisa De Hopewho will be married in California on September 10, 2011. There are several options for you. 1) At the Ordination/Installation reception on September 18, there will be a table in the Fellowship Hall where gifts for the newlyweds can be placed. They are registered at Amazon.com, Kohl’s, Macy’s and Target. 2) The church will be collecting money for a “Wedding Check” and donations for that can be put in the Sunday offerings in a marked envelope. 3) There will be a box located on the gift table at the reception on Sept 18 for greeting cards and/or gift cards (grocery, home stores, restaurants). If you cannot attend the reception, but wish to bring a gift or card, please see Kathy Lassman on Sunday mornings or contact the church office during the week.
The Hearthstone Retirement Community annually holds a Wellness Walk for residents, and this year it will be held on Friday, September 9 beginning at 2 p.m. Most of our residents are able to walk alone or with friends, but we’d like to include those who use walkers or are in wheelchairs. With YOUR help, those who are less abled will enjoy participation. Whether you choose to go completely around or just part way around Greenlake, it will be about 60-90 minutes of walking, talking and light refreshments afterward. There are many nursing assistants and other staff that will also be walking. Ability to walk 2-3 miles (and push a wheelchair) is needed. Simple instructions regarding use of walkers and wheelchairs will be given on-site. Group supervisor will sign liability release form. Please contact Sean Fordham at 206.517.2261.
The Ladies Guild would like thank everyone who helped, donated funds or contributed food to the Pastors lunches during the Continuing Education Class. If you would still like to donate funds, they are still being gladly accepted to help cover the total cost.
